  • Arrive ready to begin and follow the coach’s direction.
  • Salute your opponent, referee and audience before and after fencing.
  • Treat teammates, opponents, officials and equipment with respect.
  • Keep weapons controlled and wear the required protective equipment.

Before you leave

  • Confirm event, weapon, age category and check-in time.
  • Verify your licence and registration.
  • Pack complete uniform, mask, glove, chest protector and shoes.

In the fencing bag

  • At least two working weapons and two body cords.
  • Lamé, mask cord and electric bib where required.
  • Water, food, small repair kit and club jacket or shirt.

Fencing language, made clearer

A few terms members and families hear most often at practice and competitions.

Piste
The marked strip on which a fencing bout takes place.
En garde
The ready position and the referee’s command to prepare.
Parry
A defensive blade action that prevents an opponent’s attack from landing.
Riposte
The offensive action made immediately after a successful parry.
Priority
The right-of-way convention used to award a hit in foil and sabre.
Poules
The round-robin first stage used at most fencing competitions.
